Pilates
One2one sessions
Private one2one sessions are available and if you have a special need or are new to Pilates it is well worth while having one or two sessions with me before you join a class or you may prefer an individual lesson rather than the class situation. I will conduct a postural analysis, discuss confidentially your problems and put together a package of exercises and lifestyle changes that will help you
Why Pilates plus physio?
I heard about Pilates exercises about 20 years ago, I did a short introductory Pilates course and found that a lot of the exercises were similar to those I was teaching my physiotherapy patients with the added bonus that people enjoyed doing them and most of them kept the exercise up and did not stop which so often happens, we exercise when we have pain but soon stop once it is better only to find it returns.
The exercises seemed to work and I began to think of ways of making it easier for people to do them. A lot of people find that the weekly commitment of a class helps but if you do not like the class situation I do offer one2one sessions.
I enrolled on a course with Modern Pilates; my training lasted 6 months and included a written theory exam, practical exam and written case study and 12 week progressive exercise programme.
Having completed the course I decided to start in my village with one class a week, this soon expanded to the current 10 classes in various locations.
The classes have been running for 19 years.
What is Pilates?
If you want a gentle yet thorough and effective exercise programme to achieve core stability, improve your posture and flexibility and often help in reduction of pain then why not try Pilates.
By creating a ‘girdle of strength’ the body is better able to resist injury which is why so many top athletes turn to Pilates to keep them at peak fitness levels.
Pilates is a mind body exercise based on the 8 principles of Pilates, alignment, centring, co-ordination, concentration, relaxation, breathing flowing movement and stamina.
The mat based exercise is ideal for postural, abdominal and back work, mobility and flexibility improved pelvic floor function, relaxation and stress management
Modern Pilates mixes traditional Pilates with physiotherapy techniques and sports rehabilitation. Every movement is slow and controlled so although you are never out of breath it can be very strenuous.
The Classes
The classes run as a course and are generally in line with school terms
Numbers are limited in the class to allow for individual and hands on attention. Please book in advance to ensure you have a place on the course. The classes consist of mat based exercise, exercises in standing and the use of small equipment such as blocks, theraband and the Pilates Magic circle. 3 classes use the stability ball.
The best of Modern Pilates backed up by over 30 years physiotherapy experience.

Who is it for?
Pilates is suitable for young and old, male and female. It is suitable for top athletes who want to improve their core stability to keep them in peak condition, people returning to exercise after a break, post natal clients, those who just want to maintain and improve their general flexibility and mobility and it is often recommended by doctors physiotherapists and osteopaths as a way of helping with back pain and more importantly stopping it coming back again.
